Twenty-Five Birds and Three Dogs Rescued from Suspected Cockfighting Ring
One person was arrested and more than two dozen animals were recovered from a suspected cockfighting ring when Pennsylvania SPCA Humane Law Enforcement officers executed a search warrant on the 2200 block of N. Orkney St. last night. Officers obtained the warrant following months of investigation and rescued 25 birds, including 15 roosters, as well as three dogs that they believe were being bred as fighting dogs. The person arrested does not own the property, but has been charged with 14 felony counts of possession of fighting animals and six summary citations for lack of veterinary care and unsanitary confinement related to the dogs.

“This alleged cockfighting ring has been on the Pennsylvania SPCA’s radar for some time,” said Director of Law Enforcement George Bengal. “I’m very pleased that the investigative efforts of our officers have paid off and that we were able shut down an operation that glamorizes animal cruelty for sport.”

The birds and three pit bulls were taken to Pennsylvania SPCA headquarters for medical evaluation. The animals are in protective custody and are not available for adoption.

Since 1867, the Pennsylvania SPCA, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization headquartered in Philadelphia, has been dedicated to rescuing animals from abuse and neglect, providing lifesaving care and treatment, and reducing pet-overpopulation through low-cost spay-and-neuter clinics and public awareness initiatives. Through these efforts, the Pennsylvania SPCA prevents cruelty toward animals and promotes respect for their welfare, thus enhancing the lives of people and their companion animals throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania SPCA operates adoption centers in Wellsboro, Centre Hall, Danville and Montrose, Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia headquarters, located at 350 E. Erie Ave., houses an animal hospital, obedience training academy, adoption facility, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Humane Law Enforcement Department. Philadelphia’s Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT), powered by the Pennsylvania SPCA , is contracted by the city to perform animal control, as well as finding homes for Philadelphia's thousands of stray and surrendered animals via rescue, foster care, and adoption. To report animal cruelty or neglect, call the Pennsylvania SPCA’s 24-hour, statewide hotline at 866.601.7722.
